BUILDING CLAY STUDIOS - DIANE PECNIK

Diane Pecnik was born in Two Rivers, Wisconsin in 1946. She is part of a fifth generation of french fishermen descended from Charles and Olive LECLAIR. She currently lives and works in Maurice, Louisiana, where she creates clay sculpture in her garden-studio. The studio was built in 1999, but she has been building clay since 1992.

I work with clay in many ways using a variety of techniques and firing types. My pieces generally begin on the wheel as a whole or in parts. Though I have no particular favorite, I do find the immediacy of the raku process, and it's hauntingly moody surfaces greatly alluring.

Clay, like man, is molded both from within and from without. A form's beauty is determined by its inner strength, while its character is defined by the texture and shaping imprinted by forces acting upon it.

Clay, more than any other medium is the very stuff of creation. It lives as the artist works it. It responds in kind to touch. Its poignant gestures depict universal emotions and states of being.
